Some sort of Messianic Jewish Thanksgiving thoughts
Just some thoughts/observations I had on the significance of today for us as Christ-followers and Americans:
The mitzvah of First Fruits [bikkurim] in Deuteronomy 26:1-11 (associated with Passover, Day of First Fruits [Yom ha-Bikkurim]) is about thanksgiving to the LORD. I think that bit about the promised land must’ve been on at least a few of the pilgrims’ minds during that first Thanksgiving.
- Passover (and the deliverance from Egypt and into the Promised Land) also parallels Salvation.
- Christ fulfills this mitzvah and feast, as the first fruit among the dead (1 Corinthians 15:20-22).
- These mitzvahs are really just shadow of Christ (Hebrews 10:1-18).
But this is still a good day to feast in remembrance of all that, being thankful for this country and for eternal life!
